What to Prepare for an HHM Kitchen-Remodel Consultation

Prepare household goals, room information, appliance records, inspiration, budget boundaries, timing, and decision roles for a productive kitchen consultation.

Kitchen remodel plans, cabinet and countertop samples, appliance priorities, and project notes

A kitchen consultation works best when the household can explain what is not working, what must remain, and which decisions matter most. You do not need to solve the layout or select every product before speaking with HHM. The first goal is to organize reliable inputs for the project-specific review.

This checklist is general preparation, not a design, measurement record, engineering conclusion, permit determination, product recommendation, installation instruction, or price quote.

Document how the kitchen is used

List the people who use the room, typical cooking and cleanup patterns, storage frustrations, accessibility needs, seating expectations, entertaining habits, pets, work or school functions, and household routines that construction may disrupt. Separate essential outcomes from preferences that can be evaluated against scope and budget.

Gather room and property information

Bring the project address, ordinary photographs, available plans or prior renovation records, known HOA or historic requirements, and any known concerns involving leaks, ventilation, electrical capacity, plumbing, structure, flooring, or access. Do not open walls, remove covers, or perform unsafe investigations for the consultation.

Identify appliances and major selections

Record existing appliance model information and whether each item is expected to remain, move, or be replaced. Save inspiration images with notes explaining what you like about them. A photograph is not a specification: dimensions, clearances, utilities, installation requirements, availability, finishes, and compatibility must be verified before ordering.

Set decision and budget boundaries

Identify who can approve scope, selections, changes, and payments. Discuss the household’s working investment boundary, financing interest, desired timing, and tolerance for temporary-kitchen arrangements. A preliminary budget is a planning constraint, not an HHM price promise.

Prepare consultation questions

Ask what information is needed before design or pricing, which existing conditions require specialist review, who coordinates each trade, how allowances are reconciled, how product substitutions are handled, and what the proposal includes or excludes. Also ask about permits, delivery, storage, dust control, access, protection, cleanup, inspections, warranties, and closeout.

Use the kitchen selection and decision log to track appliance, cabinet, countertop, fixture, finish, allowance, approval, and unresolved product decisions as the scope develops.

Once those inputs are reflected in a defined scope, use the guide to comparing kitchen-remodel proposals to check controlling documents, included work, allowances, exclusions, schedule, payment, and closeout.
