Use a Kitchen Selection Log to Control Remodel Decisions

Connect cabinets, appliances, countertops, fixtures, finishes, allowances, approvals, delivery, and affected work through one dated kitchen decision log.

Kitchen cabinets, counters, backsplash, hardware, fixtures, and flooring arranged with a selection log

A kitchen contains connected decisions. A cabinet change can affect countertops, appliances, clearances, lighting, plumbing, flooring, trim, delivery, and schedule. A dated selection log gives the owner and project team one place to see what is approved, what remains open, and which document controls the next step.

The log supports communication. It does not replace signed agreements, approved drawings, specifications, change orders, permits, manufacturer instructions, or professional responsibilities.

Create a record for each decision

Assign a unique identifier, short title, room or location, responsible person, date opened, required decision date, status, and final approval date. Link the entry to the relevant drawing, proposal, allowance, product record, finish sample, meeting note, or approved change.

Capture exact product information

When known, record manufacturer, model or item number, finish, quantity, dimensions, included accessories, source, price-review date, delivery assumption, and installation responsibility. Do not treat a screenshot, saved cart, or website stock message as final procurement approval.

Connect the selection to affected work

Identify known effects on layout, utilities, adjacent finishes, fabrication, permits, delivery, storage, installation, maintenance, warranty, price, and schedule. If an effect has not been evaluated, mark it unresolved. “Preferred” should not be confused with authorization to order or install.

Reconcile allowances and changes

Link each allowance to the exact selection and the controlling agreement. Record how taxes, freight, accessories, fabrication, installation, and credits are treated. If the selection changes the accepted scope or price, use the written change process rather than calculating a customer adjustment from an informal retail comparison.

Preserve revision history

Do not erase a superseded choice. Mark it superseded, identify the replacement, and note which drawings, orders, schedules, or field instructions require revision. Before work proceeds, confirm that affected parties received the current approved information.

If a selection reveals missing room information, utility constraints, access issues, or a scope question, return to the kitchen-remodel consultation checklist and update the project record before approval or ordering.

Protect private information

Keep supplier credentials, complete payment information, passwords, sensitive customer records, and confidential dealer pricing out of general project comments. Store protected information only in the approved system with appropriate access.
