How to Verify a Contractor or Trade License in North and South Carolina

A practical guide to checking the legal business, classification, limitation, status, and trade responsibility behind a Carolina construction proposal.

Contractor credentials being checked against official licensing records

A license number on a truck or proposal is only a starting point. Verify the record through the responsible state board, confirm the legal entity matches the contract, and determine whether the classification and limitation cover the proposed work.

HHM verifies the current record for the exact contracting party and work, including state, project value, property type, trade, scope, legal entity, classification, limitation, status, insurance, and permit responsibility.

How HHM qualifies the assigned team

HHM gives clients one accountable project path. HHM verifies the business identity, applicable credentials, insurance evidence, scope fit, service area, capacity, and project requirements of every assigned specialty trade before work is coordinated.

North Carolina general contracting

The North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors states that current law defines general contractors for covered construction projects costing $40,000 or more. Licenses also carry classifications and project-value limitations. Verify the current record and rules through the NCLBGC consumer guidance and license search.

Electrical, plumbing, heating/HVAC, fuel, engineering, architecture, and other regulated work may involve separate boards and qualifications. A general contractor credential does not automatically prove every trade credential.

South Carolina residential building

South Carolina LLR’s Residential Builders Commission licenses or registers residential builders, specialty contractors, and home inspectors within its jurisdiction. Firms may also require a Certificate of Authorization depending on ownership and practice structure. Verify current individual and firm requirements through the South Carolina Residential Builders Commission. A firm certificate is not a substitute for the responsible individual credential.

Match the entity

Compare the board record with the exact name on the proposal and agreement. Review status, expiration, classification, limitation, qualifier relationship, and public disciplinary information where available. Ask for clarification when a salesperson, trade name, parent company, or subcontractor differs from the contracting party.

Verify the trade team

Ask who will perform electrical, plumbing, HVAC, gas/LP, structural, roofing, alarm/security, generator, and other specialty work and how their authority will be documented. Permit records should align with the responsible parties.

Check insurance separately

Licensing and insurance are different. Request current certificates from appropriate sources and ask your insurance adviser what coverage matters for the project. Confirm workers’ compensation and subcontractor requirements where applicable.

Retain the verification record

Save the date, source, legal entity, license number, status, classification, limitation, and any follow-up. Recheck before contract and permit because records can change.

Red flag: Do not proceed when the contracting identity, responsible qualifier, permit party, or trade responsibility cannot be explained consistently.
