Connected-home planning should begin with household needs and infrastructure—not a list of gadgets. Power, network coverage, cable pathways, equipment locations, privacy, account ownership, maintenance, and qualified installation can be coordinated before walls close.

Define outcomes and boundaries
List desired functions such as reliable internet, doorbell communication, exterior awareness, lighting control, energy monitoring, leak detection, access management, or accessibility support. Identify what should continue during an outage and what must remain manually operable.
Avoid publishing or broadly sharing camera blind spots, access schedules, network diagrams, credentials, or other information that could weaken property security.
Build the network foundation
Plan the service entry, modem/ONT, router/firewall, structured wiring enclosure or rack, switches, wireless access points, patching, ventilation, surge/backup power, labeling, and service access. Use wired connections for appropriate fixed equipment where practical and design wireless coverage from the actual construction.
Plan pathways and spare capacity
Coordinate conduits, pull strings, chases, accessible junctions, cable support, separation from power, fire stopping, exterior penetrations, and future routes. Record pathway locations before concealment without exposing them publicly.
Coordinate cameras and sensors responsibly
Review intended field of view, lighting, weather exposure, mounting, vandal resistance, maintenance access, network bandwidth, recorder/storage assumptions, electrical/network availability, and neighboring privacy. Audio, facial-recognition, license-plate, biometric, cloud, and analytics features require project-specific legal, consent, privacy, provider-policy, cybersecurity, and qualified-installation review before activation.
Define account and data ownership
The preferred model is customer-controlled accounts and unique credentials; managed systems may require documented administrative roles. Contractors should not retain passwords. Use multi-factor authentication where available, encrypted remote access, recovery contacts, supported firmware, revocation of temporary installer access, and end-of-life/factory-reset disposal procedures. Document whether recordings are local, cloud, or hybrid; who can access them; retention settings; subscription and internet dependencies; export/deletion procedures; provider-shutdown risk; updates; and account transfer.
Design for dependable operation
HHM designs cameras, alarms, sensors, apps, storage, networking, and automation around power, coverage, lighting, weather, placement, maintenance, provider dependencies, user settings, and the project’s required operating priorities.
Test and hand off
Verify labeling, connectivity, field of view, alerts, storage behavior, user roles, firmware, backups where applicable, manual operation, and safe account transfer. Provide a plain-language inventory, diagram, maintenance schedule, warranty/support division, and privacy/security checklist.
Fire alarms, medical alerts, regulated monitoring, emergency dispatch, smoke/carbon-monoxide detection, emergency egress, door release, and other life-safety functions are separated into the appropriate licensed service scope and written monitoring agreement.
Do not upload passwords, IP addresses, alarm codes, access schedules, recordings, biometric data, full network diagrams, camera blind spots, or unredacted security plans to a general interest form. Product selection and installation require a site-specific scope, verified commercial-use rights, appropriately licensed or qualified parties, privacy and cybersecurity procedures, and a written division of monitoring, warranty, subscription, and support responsibilities.
