An open pergola, roofed pavilion, adjustable shade system, and porch do not solve the same problem. The right starting point is the experience the household wants—shade, rain protection, cooking, dining, power, lighting, privacy, or a transition from the house—not the first product rendering that fits the yard.
HHM selects and coordinates the structure, foundations, attachment, drainage, utilities, permits, products, delivery, installation, and weather-exposure requirements for the property and intended use.
Compare the type of protection
- Open pergola: can organize space and support selected shade accessories but should not be represented as a roof unless the verified product and design provide that function.
- Roofed pavilion or porch: adds roof drainage, uplift, structural, flashing, and potentially more extensive permit and trade coordination.
- Adjustable or retractable system: adds moving components, controls, drainage and wind-operating limits that must follow the current product documentation.
- Freestanding shade structure: avoids some house-attachment questions but still requires verified foundations, setbacks, access, utilities, and site drainage.
Verify the site before choosing a model
Document boundaries, easements, setbacks, HOA constraints, doors, windows, roof edges, utilities, septic or wells, drainage, trees, equipment, grade, access, staging, and intended furniture or cooking zones. FEMA mapping can support early flood screening but does not replace local floodplain review, a survey, elevation information, or site-specific design.
Before excavation, post setting, anchoring, or grading, use the applicable 811/utility-locate process and identify private lines that the public locate process may not mark. Do not dig where markings, records, or conditions are uncertain.
Coordinate foundations, attachment, and water
Foundation and anchorage depend on the verified structure, loads, soils, grade, exposure, and adopted requirements. Do not copy footing or connector details from a generic plan. Where the work attaches to the home, coordinate structure, flashing, siding, drainage, and inspection access as a complete detail.
Roofed or louvered systems can redirect water. A consumer runoff tool or product rendering cannot determine acceptable grading or discharge. The responsible site/design team and AHJ must verify drainage requirements and effects on the building and adjacent property.
Plan utilities and fire features safely
HHM coordinates lighting, receptacles, fans, heaters, grills, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fire pits, gas piping, and fuel connections through address- and scope-specific design, permits, manufacturer clearances, ventilation, and qualified licensed trades.
Require a complete installed proposal
The HHM proposal identifies the exact model or material allowance; verified specifications; included and excluded options; foundations and attachment; quantities; delivery and equipment; crew and access; utilities and trade work; drainage; permits and inspections; finishes; cleanup; warranty responsibility; and assumptions that could change price.
HHM product cards use authorized media and current model specifications, pricing dates, installed-scope boundaries, and warranty responsibility. The HHM proposal controls the selected configuration, availability, included options, and installed price.
