Choose what must remain powered
Start with required outcomes during an outage. List life-safety and medical considerations, refrigeration, well or sump pumps, heating and cooling, communications, lighting, security, cooking, water heating, garage access, and business equipment. Identify which loads must run together and which can be managed or sequenced.
Generator selection should follow a documented load assessment. Manufacturer sizing tools can support early planning, but field-verified equipment data, motor-starting demand, fuel type, elevation, transfer strategy, utility requirements, and the applicable electrical requirements determine the final design. Do not use this article to perform a load calculation or choose equipment capacity.
Coordinate the transfer equipment
The transfer system separates the utility and generator sources and directs approved loads to the available source. Its type, rating, service arrangement, conductor requirements, and compatibility must match the approved design. Product cards must not imply that a generator-and-switch package automatically fits every service.
Do not perform electrical-service work, transfer-switch installation, utility interconnection, conductor selection, controls work, or energized testing from this article. Those tasks require the responsible qualified trade, applicable utility coordination, permits, inspections, selected-equipment instructions, and approved project documents.
Verify fuel before promising output
Natural gas and liquid propane have different infrastructure, storage, supply, pressure, and coordination requirements. Determine fuel availability, required capacity, regulator and piping needs, tank considerations, distance, access, and the parties responsible for utility or supplier work. Never infer adequate fuel supply from the presence of an existing gas appliance.
Do not size, connect, modify, test, or commission natural-gas or LP piping, regulators, storage, exhaust, combustion-air, or carbon-monoxide safety provisions from this guide. Fuel and life-safety work must follow the selected equipment, field conditions, responsible licensed trades where required, suppliers, utility rules, permits, and the authority having jurisdiction.
Plan the site and clearances
Document the property address, proposed location, grading, drainage, flood information, combustible construction, openings, equipment, utilities, access, noise considerations, exhaust direction, foundation, delivery path, service space, and manufacturer requirements. Clearance reductions or special configurations require current, applicable evidence and approval; an old interpretation or a photo of another installation is not project authorization.
Before excavation, anchoring, pad work, trenching, or fuel-storage work, the responsible excavator must use the applicable NC 811 or SC811 process and identify private lines that the public locate process may not mark. Do not dig where markings, records, permissions, or conditions remain uncertain.
Confirm permits and responsible trades
North Carolina OSFM has published an interpretation stating that generator and fuel-storage installation requires applicable permits. South Carolina projects must be checked with the local authority under the current adopted codes and statewide modifications. Electrical, fuel-gas, plumbing, mechanical, building, zoning, environmental, or utility requirements may apply depending on scope.
The proposal should identify who designs the system, secures permits, coordinates utilities and fuel, performs each trade, schedules inspections, completes startup, and supplies closeout records.
