How to Find the Source of a Faucet Leak—and What to Do Next

Learn how to trace a faucet leak at the spout, handle, base, supply line, or drain; shut off water safely; and decide whether a DIY repair is appropriate.

A dripping faucet wastes water, but the drip itself may not be the biggest concern. Water can also escape around the faucet base, supply connections, shutoff valves, or drain and soak into a cabinet before anyone notices. Finding the exact source is the first step toward a safe, durable repair.

This guide focuses on observation and minor, accessible maintenance. Faucet designs vary widely, and forcing a corroded valve or unfamiliar fitting can quickly turn a small leak into an emergency.

What to do first

  1. Only when no electrical or other hazard is present, contain accessible water and remove stored items from the cabinet.
  2. Dry visible surfaces and isolate whether the moisture appears during faucet use, while draining, or while the fixture is off.
  3. Confirm that the local shutoffs work and that the main water shutoff is safely accessible before disassembly.
  4. Use instructions for the identified manufacturer and model rather than a generic disassembly sequence.
  5. Stop for uncontrolled water, failed or corroded valves, concealed damage, mold concerns, or electrical exposure.

Identify where the water appears

Dry the faucet, sink, pipes, valves, and cabinet floor completely. Place dry paper towels around likely leak points. Then run the faucet through normal use and inspect each area separately.

  • Water drips from the spout when the faucet is off: an internal cartridge, washer, valve seat, or seal may be worn.
  • Water collects around the handle: an internal seal, packing component, or cartridge may be leaking.
  • Water appears at the faucet base: the faucet body, mounting seal, hose, or splash from normal use may be responsible.
  • Water forms on a supply connection: a loose or damaged connector, valve, or seal may be involved.
  • Water appears only while the sink drains: inspect the drain assembly, trap, disposal, and dishwasher connections rather than the faucet.

Condensation can resemble a leak. Cold pipes may “sweat” in humid conditions, producing moisture across a broad surface instead of at one fitting. Continue observing until you can connect the moisture to a specific action.

Know how to shut off the water

Most sinks have hot and cold shutoff valves below them. Turn the faucet off, then gently close both valves according to their design. Do not force a valve that is stuck, heavily corroded, leaking at the stem, or unsupported. Know where the home’s main water shutoff is before disassembling anything.

After closing the local valves, open the faucet to confirm that flow stops and to relieve pressure. If water continues flowing, the local valves may not be working. Stop and use a qualified plumber rather than beginning a repair with an unreliable shutoff.

Check accessible connections without overtightening

If a faucet-side connection downstream of a reliably closed shutoff is damp, dry it and verify that water is emerging from that joint rather than running down from above. Do not adjust a connection while it is leaking or pressurized. Follow the faucet or connector manufacturer’s instructions and use the correct tools while supporting the mating fitting.

Do not tighten the house-side connection to a shutoff valve, move the valve body, or work on an unidentified, corroded, unsupported, or damaged fitting. Overtightening can damage gaskets, threads, tubing, or valves. Stop and use a qualified plumber if the fitting type, shutoff condition, or safe procedure is uncertain. Do not rely on exterior tape or sealant as a leak repair.

Research the faucet before opening it

For a spout drip or handle leak, find the manufacturer and model if possible. Look beneath the sink, behind the handle, or in the original paperwork. Manufacturer instructions and an exploded-parts diagram can show the correct cartridge, seal kit, and removal sequence.

Take photos before removing components. Cover the drain so small screws cannot fall into it. Arrange parts in removal order and avoid mixing hot- and cold-side components. Use only replacement parts specified for the faucet model.

Understand common internal repairs

Many modern faucets use a replaceable cartridge. Others use compression stems, ceramic discs, or ball-style assemblies. A worn component can allow water past the closed valve, but the correct repair depends on the design.

After the water is reliably shut off, a straightforward manufacturer-directed repair may involve removing the handle, retaining hardware, and old cartridge or seals; cleaning accessible mineral deposits without scratching sealing surfaces; and installing the specified replacement. Never improvise the order or use excessive leverage. Stop if parts are seized, the valve body moves, or the instructions do not match what you see.

Restore water slowly and test

Once everything is reassembled, make sure the faucet is in the off position. Open the shutoff valves slowly while watching the connections. Then test cold and hot water, move the handle through its full range, and inspect above and below the sink.

Dry all surfaces and repeat the paper-towel check after several minutes. Inspect again later the same day. A connection can remain dry during a quick test but leak slowly under regular pressure or movement. Add the follow-up check to your seasonal home-maintenance record.

Call a professional when the risk is larger than the repair

Professional service is appropriate when shutoff valves do not work, pipes are corroded, water is entering a wall or floor, cabinetry is swollen, mold is suspected, or the faucet is attached to unusual plumbing. Also get help if the leak returns after replacing the specified wear parts; repeated failure can indicate damage elsewhere in the assembly.

For active leakage, remove stored items from the cabinet, contain water if it is safe to do so, and dry the area promptly. Photograph damage for your records. Do not leave a known leak unattended.
